Portsmouth University, Victoria Tower
Design of the public realm to the base of a new tall building for Portsmouth University and Watkin Jones. The tower sits within the conservation area of the civic centre of Portsmouth, close to a number of listed buildings. It is situated beside the historic Victoria Park, which gives the tower its name. As a member of the project team, Matthew, whilst working for Plincke, was responsible for commissioning a qualitative historic review of Victoria Park and scoping the visual analysis with English Heritage. He subsequently carried out the Townscape and Visual Impact Assessment.
The design of the public realm explored the opportunity of reopening a pedestrian link under the rail line to the Guildhall Square, a tunnel that had been closed for over 60 years. As part of the design process, Matthew worked alongside Architecture PLB and the BMT to assess and mitigate the impact of the wind on the public’s use of the building and the park, through a variety of landscape led interventions.
