Matthew worked with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Kier Central, on the competition to design the new site for UTC Swindon. The project was to create a dynamic and inspirational learning space from the restoration of the listed Engine Work Sheds of the historic Great Western Railway. Literally backing onto the Swindon main line, the development had to take account of acoustic issues, as well as effect on the Conservation area and listed structures. The landscape elements are designed to be in keeping with the industrial landscape character.
We created a series of inter-related courtyards and terraces to provide different uses, offering real opportunitites for indoor and outdoor learning, dining and socialising. Our design for the main entrance, whilst respecting and regognising the important heritage listing of the boundary wall, has created an attractive setting onto the community, which harmonises with the local character, whilst providing an inspirational approach to the college.
