Brandon Yard - Matthew Wigan Associates

Brandon Yard, Bristol

The proposed Development comprises the reuse of the two derelict historic buildings and the introduction of of a new L shaped building in a key site on Bristol's harbourside. The northern approach to the site is designed as a pedestrian friendly mixed use area, with flush kerbs and hard paving. A private communal courtyard space will incorporate hard and soft areas to accommodate relaxing and social activities of the residents. Low trees will break up the scale of the courtyard, whilst low hedges will improve the local microclimate. The harbourside walk  that runs parallel to the Floating Harbour wall will be a predominantly hard public realm space, with deep planting beds and slight level change, helping to demarcate the boundary between the public and private areas. The area enjoys wonderful views across the water to the SS Great Britain.

The external landscape explores the process of industrialised illumination, its raw materials and its far-reaching effects on the city of Bristol. Linear banding represents Bristol's coal seams, and ripples, representing light, emanate from the site of the original Gas Tower. As the lines of the light contours intersect the bands of the coal measures, these ripples in history are reflected in changes to the landscape elements of planting, paving, lighting and seating.
